ABOUT BLACK GIRL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Black Girl Scholarship's mission is simple. As Black Girl Advisory Board, we want to support the educational journey and experiences of Black Girls and reduce financial burden through philanthropy.

  • We believe that Black girls are deserving of financial investments and community care.

  • We believe that we can all be philanthropists.

  • We believe that change starts in our own backyards. This is our Sankofa moment.

  • We believe in the liberation of Black girls through community, education, and funding.

What is a giving circle?

A giving circle is a group with shared values collaborating for change. Giving circles, also known as collective giving, bring like-minded individuals together to support a shared cause.

Our Cause

According to the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy*, only 1.8% of philanthropic dollars in the United States are invested in causes focused on women and girls. Investment in women and girls of color is even lower; according to an analysis by Ms. Foundation in 2020 less than 1% of the nearly $70 billion given annually by foundations across America, reaches women and girls of color. And, in the American South, women of color receive the lowest amount of philanthropic funding per capita in the entire country. The Black Girl Scholarship Fund’s goal is to address the historic underinvestment of women and girls of color and begin to close the gap.

Through our giving circle model, we directly support the educational journeys of Black girls in Alabama. As a collective, we aim to make systemic change and reduce the financial burden of higher education through collective giving.
